Search and rescue
The Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC), division of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), is responsible for co-ordinating Search and Rescue (SAR) for ships at sea. Under the National Search and Rescue Plan, searching for missing recreational craft and fishing vessels is initially the responsibility of State or Northern Territory Police. However, if an incident reaches the point at which police resources are over-extended, the RCC may then be requested to take over rescue co-ordination.
