Rail Crossing Safety Campaign
2008 Rail Safety campaign - 101 Elephants
That's how much just one locomotive weighs.
An entire train weighs ten times this much and when travelling at 110 kilometres per hour can take up to 2 kilometres to stop.
Did you know that trains have the right of way at rail level crossings? They can’t stop quickly and can’t change direction to avoid you. Trains are fast and quiet and can come from either your left or your right side. It’s difficult to judge the speed and distance of approaching trains, so it is important for you to Stop, Look, Listen and Think when you come to a rail level crossing and again before you cross.
In Australia every year, motorcycle riders, car and truck drivers, passengers and pedestrians die as a result of crashes with trains at rail level crossings.
Every one of these deaths could have been avoided.
Most fatalities at level crossings have occurred during daylight hours, in good weather, and on straight, dry and level roads.
By simply obeying the warning signs and crossing the tracks at designated rail level crossings, you can stay safe and avoid the increasing number of near misses reported in the Territory.
Stop at STOP signs when the lights are flashing and when boom gates are down, and give way at GIVE WAY signs. At rail level crossings with flashing lights, don’t proceed until the lights have stopped flashing.
Trains can come at any time of day or night and it is up to each and every one of us to obey the warning signs at rail level crossings and share the responsibility for improving safety on our roads.
